the UK and Ireland

Facing stiff competition from an improving national rail network, plus pressure from the green lobby and increasingly cost-conscious corporates, the domestic aviation industry is enduring turbulent times.

Total domestic passenger numbers were down five per cent in 2008, with the latest figures from the Civil Aviation Authority, for the month of May, also painting a bleak picture.

At Manchester Airport domestic passenger numbers have been hit by improved rail connections with London, while London City Airport has felt the impact of the finance sector’s belt-tightening measures. Air traffic to those other financial bastions, Jersey and the Isle of Man, has not fared well either, and Aberdeen, a gateway to the rich resources of the North Sea, handled nine per cent fewer passengers in July 2009 than July last year, according to the latest statistics from BAA.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The UK still boasts a highly impressive network of nation-wide flights, with more than 15 airports handling over one million domestic passengers in 2008.
The likes of Flybe, bmi, Ryanair and easyJet continue to criss-cross the country, while carriers such as Eastern Airways, Manx2, Air Southwest and Aer Arann have carved out their own respective strongholds.

BAA’s latest passenger numbers also point towards a return to growth with the extent of year-on-year slumps shrinking month by month, heading back towards pre-recession levels. And as European compatriots such as France and Germany officially emerge from recession, can the UK look forward to a post-slump boom in domestic business travel? Surely it’s only a matter of time...

Read on for our guide to who flies where across 25 of the UK and Ireland’s busiest airports.
